The plant, operated by SiteServ Recycling has had four fires in as many years.

Crews are still tackling the most recent, with drivers travelling close to the site being warned to take care.

We have decided to suspend the importation of waste under the environmental permit for the regulated facility at Hangars A and B, off the Llanwit Major Road, Llandow, operated by SiteServ Recycling (SW) Ltd.

While our main focus at the moment is working closely with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Public Health Wales and Vale of Glamorgan Council to manage the effects of the blaze, we have taken this emergency measure to minmise further risks of serious pollution.

Fire crews have been working to contain the fire since reports of the blaze came through at around 7pm yesterday and remain on site.

Public Health Wales environmental health protection experts are monitoring the situation and working closely with the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the fire service and Natural Resources Wales.

Local residents are strongly advised to keep all doors and windows closed due to acrid smoke, but as yet there are no reports of people experiencing ill effects from the fire.

If you live in an area affected by smoke, stay inside and close all doors and windows. If you have to go outside, try to keep away from the areas affected by visible smoke or ash. Motorists who have to travel through the smoke should keep their windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed. Exposure to smoke may irritate your eyes, nose and throat and you may experience coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. For most people, these symptoms will disappear very quickly and will not lead to long-term health problems. If you are concerned about any symptoms you are experiencing, contact your GP or NHS Direct Wales.

– Andrew Kibble, Public Health Wales Environmental Public Health Team

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s emergency planning team is working to limit disruption.

A minor road leading to the site remains closed but there is no other impact on the local highway network. Local schools have been advised to open as usual.

There is no impact on the local water supply.
