Royal Welsh battalions 'amalgamated' in Army cuts

The Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed that the 2nd Battalion the Royal Welsh will be withdrawn and amalgamated with 1st the Royal Welsh. The cuts to the number of soldiers will come into force by Autumn 2013. How many of these will go from the Royal Welsh is still unknown.

Currently 1 Royal Welsh has 560 members and 2 Royal Welsh has 640. No decision has been made on whether to close either of the two bases used by the regiment in Chester or Tidworth in Wiltshire.

The Queens Dragoons Guards, known as the Welsh Cavalry, the Welsh Guards and 14th Signal Regiment, based near Haverfordwest are expected to remain unaffected by today's announcement.
