People in the South West are being urged to donate life-saving blood in the New Year.

NHS Blood and Transplant says the number of donations drops over the festive period as more appointments are missed.

Blood is vital for people who need regular transfusions but less than three percent of people in the UK donate.

Troy Joyner has sickle cell anaemia, a rare blood disorder that causes dangerous clotting.

In Troy's case it led to a series of mini-strokes.

Every eight weeks all his red blood cells are removed and replaced with donor ones.

Troy's treatments are possible thanks to people who give blood.

Blood is always needed but at this time of year, donations fall.
