The teenager was on the 16ft speedboat along with two school friends both 15, and a 50-year-old man when it overturned.

There were attempts to save the teenager, including by two jet ski riders from the group, who dived down to try and reach her.

However by the time she was freed it was too late, and she did not regain consciousness.

"Our beautiful Emily was a caring loving, gentle daughter and sister.

"She was full of life and had the world ahead of her. She was our diamond, now shining bright in the sky.

"She will be missed and forever in our hearts."

The teenager was described as "popular, happy, friendly" in a moving tribute from her school.

The hearing, in Torquay, is expected to last two days.
