A retired scientist has been sentenced to life in prison for battering his partner to death after a row about the duvet.

74-year-old Edgar Fairhurst from Bideford killed his partner, 83-year-old Marjorie Elphick, with a hammer at their home in Riverside Close in the early hours of Wednesday 30 December 2015.

Fairhurst told the court Marjorie had been nagging him about the noise he made when straightening the duvet. It was then that he launched his attack on his partner of 40 years, killing her in her own bed

The jury at Exeter Crown Court found Fairhurst guilty of murder following a four-day trial. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 20 years.
