Man found dead in supermarket coldstore

A night shift worker has been found dead inside a walk-in freezer at a Tesco supermarket.

The man, who was in his 50s and worked in the bakery section, is thought to have collapsed after entering the sub-zero store.

Worried colleagues raised the alarm at 1.22am when he failed to emerge and they discovered him unconscious in the freezer.

Police and paramedics rushed to the shop in Thornbury, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

We were deeply saddened by this news and to have lost a much valued and loved colleague from our store.

It is understood the man was not locked or trapped in the freezer, but had collapsed while working inside.

Staff reported to us at 1.22am that a man in his 50s was unconscious and not breathing.

South West Ambulance

Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious and had passed a file to the Avon Coroner.

The Health and Safety Executive said the incident was a matter for South Gloucestershire Council.

We were called at 1.40am to reports that a man had collapsed in a freezer in a store in Midland Way, Thornbury.
