The Battle of the Somme: the West remembers the fallen of July 1st 1916

Across the West people have fallen silent to remember the fallen on the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Vigils marked the anniversary across the region with a Tommy helmet and candle laid on a table at Gloucester Cathedral.

People blew whistles on the moment when - 100 years ago - thousands of men were ordered over the top to their deaths.
