A body of a man has been found in the water off a Devon resort.

Police alerted coastguards to reports of the body in the water near Brixham Quay at around 7am on Saturday (17 September).

The Torbay inshore lifeboat recovered the body with the help of Berry Head coastguard team.

Police say they were alerted by a local fisherman.

We received a call at 7.15am from a member of the public on the 999 system and stating what appears to be a body was seen in the water while he was fishing off Breakwater Beach off Berry Head Road. The area has now been sealed off and is being treated as a police scene to allow the emergency services to recover the body. Inquiries will now be carried out to identity the person.

It comes as police called off a major search for a man reported missing from a yacht in Devon on 10 September.

Police say the man - named as Tom Hodgson - was holidaying in the area and after leaving a yacht in Brixham harbour and did not return. His empty dinghy was later found.

The area around Breakwater beach now been cordoned off. Officers are continuing investigations to formally identify the body.
