A stolen car has smashed into a medieval bridge in the centre of a Wiltshire town causing "extensive damage".
A black Mercedes C180 hit the Grade 1 listed Town Bridge in Bradford-on-Avon in the early hours.
Wiltshire Police said the car was stolen from nearby Leigh Park Road along with a television, an iPad, and a laptop.
Wiltshire Council has cordoned off the damaged parapet for assessment.
It has to seek permission from English Heritage and the Environment Agency to repair the former packhorse bridge.
The bridge is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument which gives it special protection.
All the stones dislodged in the crash will have to be recovered from the River Avon and a specialist will be employed to repair the stonework.
