'Tell my wife I love her' - rugby players get stuck in lift

Seven professional rugby players had to be rescued when they got stuck in a hotel lift - because they broke the weight limit.

The men were members of the Sale Sharks team due to play Bath at the Rec on 7 October.

  • Wales' scrum half Mike Phillips

  • South African prop Brian Mujati

  • Samoan centre Johnny Leota

  • Flanker David Seymour

  • Wing Paulo Odogwu

  • One-time Wales international Eifion Lewis-Roberts

  • Tongan prop Halani 'Aulika

Together they weighed 755kg - more than 120kg above the maximum weight limit in the lift at the Hilton hotel in Bath.

As a result it got stuck half-way between the reception and the first floor and the players had to call for help.

They spent an hour and a quarter trapped inside as they waited for the fire service and an engineer. They managed to prise open a gap in the lift doors and were handed water and food.

Johnny Leota laughingly wrote 'Tell My Wife I Love Her' in the condensation forming on the metal interior of the lift.

Brian Mujati filmed the whole experience on his mobile phone and posted it on his YouTube channel.

The players were eventually freed at 2.50pm - well before their game against Bath at 7.45 that evening.

Sadly they were beaten 30-3 - but they have a great story to tell from their day.
