Why is it getting colder? By Bob Crampton, Weather Presenter
One answer is that its winter! Dealing with the immediate reason, its down to our old friend - the jet stream. It's to the south of Great Britain allowing a huge cold airmass to position itself over the country. It's moved in from the north dragging in much colder air from the Arctic.
However during the weekend as low pressure crosses the southern half of the country a slight incursion of milder air will see the temperatures rise a touch.
The western side of Wales and the North-West of England now have a warning out for icy patches tonight. The West Country is just outside the warning area.
But temperatures will get down to freezing so there'll be a frost if not the icy conditions.
More significant with be the conditions overnight Saturday and into Sunday.
Strong winds and heavy rain is expected during this period. The likelihood is that it will be short-lived and it will clear up to give us a reasonable Sunday.
