An artwork to recognise the generosity of organ donors and their families will be opened at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital by Dame Janet Trotter on Thursday 9 March.

The piece is called '1000 Thank Yous' and it is in the shape of a heart. The shape is formed by gold tags, which have been engraved with thank-you messages from organ recipients to donors.

The stunning artwork was funded by the Organ Donation Committee that is part of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Committee wanted the permanent installation to provide a reminder of the power of organ and tissue donation - hoping to inspire people to donate their organs.

Organ donors make an extraordinary contribution and each donor can save and improve up to nine lives.

Some of the engraved messages can be seen in the video below.

It is so important to have this recognition for all those patients and families that have willingly thought of others and have given the gift of life.
