Rail travel to and from Bath Spa is to be disrupted over the Easter bank holiday weekend as the £15 million modernisation scheme continues. Trains running in and out of the station will be replaced with buses, and others will be diverted.

The work forms part of the preparations for the arrival of intercity express trains later this year which will improve customer comfort and increase capacity. It includes widening and resurfacing platforms, realigning the track and reducing the stepping distance for passengers.

Bath remains very much open for business throughout this period. We would like to thank passengers for their continued patience. Later this year our new Intercity Express Trains will enter passenger services and will provide more seats, more trains and with the completion of electrification faster journeys.

– Tod Graham, Bath Spa Station manager for GWR

Car parking at the station will also be affected, but drop-off points and spaces for Blue Badge holders will remain accessible. Organisers have stressed that the work has been carefully structured so that there is no impact on the listed station building.

Working closely with English Heritage, Historic England and Bath and North East Somerset Council throughout the 18 month planning period, we have developed plans that will bring rail travel into the 21st century, while preserving Bath’s important heritage.

– Michael Jones, Network Rail project manager

The work started on 8 April and is scheduled to finish on Sunday 23rd.
