A West Country footballer whose career took him from Mangotsfield United to Liverpool via Bristol Rovers has returned to the place where it all began. Nick Tanner was part of the last Liverpool side to win the League and has been reliving fond memories from his football career, many of which are in his new book. Nick tells ITV West Country Sport Correspondent Jonty Messer about one particularly surreal phone call during his unusual route to football stardom.
Nick Tanner's story from lower league football to the biggest club in the country is one that still draws a smile in today's world of agents and academies.
After impressing at Mangotsfield in the 1980s he moved to Bristol Rovers in exchange for some floodlight bulbs and went on to make more than a hundred appearances.
Then having agreed to join Torquay United, one of the biggest clubs in Europe came calling. In the end he played nearly 60 times for Liverpool under Graham Souness and alongside stars like Jamie Redknapp and Bruce Grobbelaar.
An amazing journey now put into words and unlikely to be repeated in today's modern game.
