Police are urging people to be aware of the dangers of current high tides after a woman and her child became stranded waist deep in river water.

They were following the Severn Bore near Quedgeley when they got stuck shortly before 11am today (Monday 2 April).

Emergency call handlers kept the woman on the phone while police and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service managed to trace her and co-ordinate her rescue and that of her six-year-old child.

This was a really scary incident for the woman but thanks to a great team effort involving our police helicopter colleagues, officers on the ground and our fire and rescue colleagues we were able to locate her and bring her to safety.

There’s been a 9.6 metre tide and a two star bore, which has completely caught this woman out. One moment she was on a pathway, the next moment the water rushed up behind her and she was waist deep.

Please be careful if you’re walking near the river or flood plains. If you want to follow the bore do so from high ground and don’t get caught unawares.

This could have had a very different ending.
