Plymouth swimmer Ben Proud has been disqualified from the men's 50m butterliy at the Commonwealth Games. The world champion notched up what would have been a Games record of 22:84 seconds in his heat but was judged to have moved early on the blocks.

The 23-year-old's appeal against his disqualification was thrown out. His family, who are out in the Gold Coast to support him, were devastated for him.

I am just heartbroken for Benjamin as this is what he trains for, but it is what it is and time to focus on the best he can do in the freestyle.

– Sally Proud, Ben's mother

Ben's Commonwealth hopes haven't come to an end - he will now focus on competing in the 50m freestyle on Monday.
