Straw crisis for farmers in the West Country

Sorry, this content isn't available on your device.

Straw is vital for farmers across the West Country and is essential for keeping cattle clean.

But severe snow storms at the beginning of the year has prompted a spike in demand for straw leading to expensive prices.

One farmer in East Huntspill says:

Straw at the moment, I think, is trading around about anything from a hundred a sixty to two hundred pounds a tonne. A tonne of straw don’t go very far. A tonne of straw do not go very far.

After a difficult start to the year, farmers are looking for support.

The Farming Minister says it's been a wet winter and a late spring:

We have made sure that any farmer that hadn’t received their single farm payment received a bridging payment and we also successfully secured from the Commission a derogation from the so-called ‘three crop rule’ for farmers who’ve been unable to get in all of the crops they planned to sow.
