In the run up to Christmas, donations to foodbanks usually increase, but this can lead to a rise in unwanted items and also a shortage of essential foods for those in need. The same items are often donated, leading to a build up of the certain products that sometimes go to waste, because they reach their sell-by-date before they need to be handed out.

Now a group of teenagers from Exeter's Community trust has come up with the simple idea of adding labels to shops highlighting what foodbanks really need. It's now been rolled out in every Sainsbury's store in the country.
