Councillor Ian Boulton, for neighbouring Staple Hill, has condemned the incident as "mindless vandalism".

Trefor Southwell, who lives nearby, says his wife called the fire service.

We saw smoke from the window and my wife called the fire brigade, who had already been called.

She went around to the park to show them the entrance and they put it out.

We didn’t really look much at the damage but I think it’s mainly the flooring and some of the rubber toadstools.

Fingers crossed the metal equipment is okay.

That flooring is expensive, however. My wife helped raise money for the park around eight to 10 years back, along with councillor Michael Bell.

The play area, which cost more than £80,000, was targeted by arsonists in May 2014.
