Twenty members of the public have been given a rare opportunity to climb the bridge that connects Devon and Cornwall.

50,000
Number of vehicles a day that cross the bridge
£2m
Cost of maintaining the bridge each year
£10m
Invested over the next few years for essential maintenance and repairs

The lucky winners of a recent ballot got to climb up the Tamar Bridge towers on Friday 21 June to celebrate the opening of a new visitor centre.

Except for those who routinely carry out maintenance work on the bridge, this was a one-off opportunity.

ITV West Country reporter Steve Hardy also got to check out the panoramic views and experience the 73-metre hike to the top.
