The officer, who is 25 years old, remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Superintendent Pete Warren said:

He’s in good spirits despite the injuries he suffered in the line of duty and underwent an operation last night which lasted several hours. Thankfully the operation went well. He remains in hospital but we’re hopeful he’ll be discharged later today to continue his recovery at home.

We’d like to wholeheartedly thank the public for all their support and kind words. It means a lot to the officer, his family and everyone here at Avon and Somerset Police.

The Police Federation told ITV News the incident highlights the dangers officers face while on duty.

Policing is a dangerous, dangerous job. It's very enjoyable but by the same token it has its risks. This is just one of those such incidents where, unfortunately, he's doing his best, he's tackling some criminals and he's fallen and sustained those injuries. That is one of the dangers of our policing of today.

– Insp Andy Robuck Police Federation

The incident comes a week after an officer in Berkshire died while on duty, prompting tributes and a fundraising page which states:

"Police officers all over Thames Valley and the rest of the UK go to work each and every day to do their duty."

"We are courageous, caring and compassionate. We confront danger on a daily basis."
