Student sentenced after threatening to 'randomly shoot' Exeter University classmates with fake gun

A student has been sentenced to eight months in jail after threatening to shoot fellow classmates at Exeter University in June.

Yihe Xiong took a replica gun onto campus and said he would "randomly open fire" if his presentation didn't go to plan.

The 25-year-old from China said he had 12 bullets loaded into the replica Beretta 92 weapon, sparking a major armed police response.

The armed officers attended Streatham campus after the masters student then pointed the gun at a student sat behind him saying "Here's another target".

Firearm officers only discovered the weapon was a replica once they had physically examined it.

He told the court he did not have a grudge against any of his classmates and said he only intended to fool them for a short period of time.
