The Big Issue sellers in the West Country are being given the technology to start taking contactless card payments from magazine buyers.

The system was trialled in several places, including Bath and Bristol, and the success led to the decision to rollout nationwide.

Tech company iZettle are working with The Big Issue to distribute portable contactless card readers to vendors across the country.

One seller in Barnstaple who has been part of the trial said the system has made a visible difference to his daily takings and has boosted his customer numbers.

I get five or six card payments a day now and I’m picking up clients who haven’t had cash. I’ve noticed they come back again and pay by card, they prefer not having to go and look for change. Sometimes people would say they were going to get cash but something might distract them, so you do get extra customers this way.

The initiative is the first of its kind and aims to help The Big Issue vendors - who buy every copy of the magazine upfront for 50% of the cover price - to continue to make a living in an increasingly cashless society.
