All lanes open after discovery of body near Gloucester brings M5 to standstill

The M5 has reopened after the discovery of a body on the carriageway on Wednesday morning (Oct 30) closed a stretch of the M5.

Gloucestershire Police was alerted to the discovery around 4am on the motorway near Gloucester.

Around seven miles of the road was then closed in both directions between J12 for Quedgeley and J11A at Brockworth.

More than 12 hours after closing, the northbound carriageway re-opened alongside lanes 1 and 2 southbound.

Today (Oct 31) the remaining lane was reinstated and speed restrictions lifted.

Specialist officers are still working to formally identify the person who died and a number of tests will be undertaken in the coming days.

Officers would once again like to thank road users for their patience and understanding throughout yesterday during the lengthy closures, which were necessary to allow them to gather evidence.

They would also like to thank everyone who has come forward with information and dashcam footage so far, which is helping them to piece together the events of this sad incident.

Anyone who travelled between junctions 11 and 12 on either carriageway between 3.45am and 4.15am yesterday, and has not already spoken to police, is asked to call 101 quoting incident 34 of 30 October.
