It was the first year for the category, which was created to encourage hospitality businesses to become more welcoming to our four-legged friends.
ITV West Country's Grace Pascoe visits the pub - and the pets -that has been named the most dog-friendly in Cornwall
The finalists for "Cornwall’s Most Dog Friendly Pub" were nominated by members of the public throughout the summer before being judged by some of the county’s most discerning four-legged friends and their owners from the Tourism Awards. The award has been sponsored - appropriately - by Devon-based dog nutrition experts Forthglade.
We’ve been amazed by how popular the new dog-friendly award has been. It seems that the dog friendliness of a pub is more important to us than ever before. With the help of Forthglade supporting the award, we’ve been able to recognise and reward The Halzephron for all the work they’re doing to make the dogs of Cornwall feel truly welcome.
The Red Lion in Blackwater won Silver and The Pandora Inn in Mylor received Bronze for their canine welcome.
Claire Murray, the landlady of the Halzephron Inn was delighted to get Gold.
The Halzephron Inn are proud to win this award, as we know families with pets choose to go to pubs where they are welcomed with genuine affection and not just accepted. It means a lot to us and our customers with two legs as well as four paws. Our resident setters Brewster and Diego, are delighted, and love nothing more than welcoming friends old and new.
2,500 pubs across the West Country were nominated for the accolade. The county winners will now go forward for the South West Tourism Awards, which are due to take place at Exeter Cathedral on 6 February 2020.
