Dumped rubbish puts road near Cheltenham at risk of closure

A country road near Cheltenham may be forced to temporarily close - at a cost of thousands of pounds - in order to clean up litter dumped by drivers.

Residents in the village of Badgeworth have spent hours picking up rubbish in Cool Pool Lane but say they can’t fully access the road due to safety concerns.

Some have complained about the issue to Tewkesbury Borough Council, which spends around half a million pounds every day cleaning up litter.

But because of Cool Pool Lane’s narrow layout and 60mph speed limit, spokesperson Peter Tonge said a temporary road closure may be required in order to clear the rubbish.

It is really disappointing to see this amount of litter blighting our beautiful rural lanes.

Litter thrown from cars is particularly dangerous to pick up from national speed limit roads, and costs the council a significant amount of money to collect, as well as it clearly damaging our local environment.

The litter is all along Cold Pool Lane and in a particularly difficult place to clear because the road itself is 60mph, narrow and windy – and so a road closure may be required for clearance to be carried out safely.

The litter is on private land and public land, and so we will liaise with the county council to see if any full road or lane closures are already planned for this road, and the landowner to see if we can encourage them to clear their ditches at the same time.
