A man from Gloucester has been arrested after a boy died following a collision in Monmouth.

The man was driving a bus when the incident happened on Monday on the A4666 Hereford Road between Withy Lane and Buckholt just before 4pm.

Police confirmed the boy was seven years old and was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson said his family are being supported by specially trained officers.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Ambulance crews arrived to find a pedestrian, a boy, who had been involved in a collision with a bus.

"Sadly, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead on scene.”

It is believed several emergency vehicles attended the scene.

The A466 was closed in both directions after the crash, although traffic and travel information service reported that it reopened at around 9.30pm.

The man, a 45-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called yesterday (13 January, 2020) at approximately 3.44pm to reports of a road traffic collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian on the A466, Monmouth.

"With the support of West Midlands Ambulance Service, we responded with one emergency ambulance and two rapid response vehicles.”

Police said officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or if anyone has dash cam footage to contact Gwent Police.
