Somerset goalkeeper on England standby

A goalkeeper from Clevedon in North Somerset has been put on standby for England's squad for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine next month.

19-year-old Jack Butland, who spent two spells on loan with Cheltenham Town this season, plays for Birmingham City and has represented England at Under-21 level. He'll be called up if any of the three keepers in the squad get injured. He started out with local team Clevedon United.

Rare football programme sells for record price at auction

One of Britain's rarest programmes has sold for £23,500 at auction. The high sale has set a new world record price for a programme sold at auction. The official FA Cup final match card for Bristol City against Manchester United in 1909 cost just one old penny to buy at the time.


Pentathlon: Olympic selection

The competition for Olympic selection between the Bath-based women's British Modern Pentathlon team has been resolved. Mhairi Spence won the world title in Rome to book her place at London 2012. Her team-mate Samantha Murray took bronze to earn the second Olympic team spot.

But Beijing silver medallist Heather Fell, and Freyja Prentice who had been in the running, missed out.

Football Preview

Bristol City play Watford at Ashton Gate. In League One Yeovil play Charlton. Down in League Two Swindon Town will play Totquay United. Cheltenham can get back into the top three if they can win at Shrewsbury. Bristol Rovers go to west country rivals Plymouth Argyle.
