Yate Town achieved their greatest-ever victory last night as they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time ever. They beat Newport in extra time - a club 88 places above them in non-league football.

All the more remarkable considering they're at the bottom of their league and most of the players have other jobs. Chris Spittles reports.

Reaction to Yate's historic win

Yate Town have re-written the history books after pulling off a remarkable victory over Blue Square Premier leaders Newport County. It means they've set up a meeting with Cheltenham Town in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.

Scott Thomas and Matt Groves both scored in extra-time to send Rob Cousins' side marching.

Yate Town is celebrating today after reaching the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

They knocked out Conference leaders Newport 3-1, with extra-time goals from Scott Thomas and Matt Groves helping to secure victory.

Yate, who are bottom of Southern League Division One South & West, will visit Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup first round.
