Whose responsibility is it to stop a fight when necessary?

That of the referee and the fighter's cornermen. In theory, a trainer will know his fighter well enough to know if he should continue, particularly given many fighters' pride will not allow them to willingly withdraw. That said, a trainer's pride can influence his judgement, meaning the ref - who has a superior view of the fight and the fighters' condition - may need to intervene.

Should Blackwell-Eubank Jnr have been stopped earlier?

Only with the benefit of hindsight. To watch live was to witness a fight in which Blackwell, while losing, was more than competitive. He concluded the majority of his most punishing periods by fighting back, and even wobbled Eubank Jnr with a right hand. Lockett could be heard reminding Blackwell that they had expected to be behind but that their plan was to target a tiring Eubank Jnr in the closing rounds. This was not a case of attempting to survive to the final bell for the sake of survival, this was the gradual pursuit of a long-term tactic. Those criticising suggest the fight could have been stopped during the seventh but Blackwell could actually have suffered his injury in the opening round or in the fight's build-up where, among others, he sparred the heavy-handed George Groves and talented Liam Williams. Without the injury that could not be seen, stopping the fight then would have seemed premature.

What is Loughlin's reputation like?

Loughlin is rightly considered one of Britain's finest officials, and has not previously appeared reluctant to end a fight. He had also already overseen one involving Blackwell. There could be few complaints from Saturday: as soon as Blackwell's eye became swollen, he asked for the ringside doctor's opinion and rightly did not hesitate to act and end it. Another respected referee, Mickey Vann, has since told The Telegraph he also felt the fight should not have been stopped any earlier.

And Lockett's?

The Welshman is among Britain's most promising trainers, and because of his knowledge is regularly used as a pundit by BoxNation. He is also known to be extremely close to Blackwell and experienced being rescued by his own corner in his only world-title fight against Kelly Pavlik in 2008. On his biggest nights as a trainer, when Gavin Rees fought Adrien Broner and when Enzo Maccarinelli challenged Juergen Braehmer, he withdrew both Rees and Maccarinelli inside six rounds, despite both being involved in high-profile, world-title fights. His judgement was right then, as it appeared to be watching live on Saturday.
