The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, has announced that there will be funding to widen the A303, which runs from Wiltshire to Cornwall but has a number of bottlenecks, especially on the Blackdown Hills in Somerset where it becomes single carriageway.

Government spending plan in the South West
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, has announced plans to boost the country's economy by investing billions of pounds in a series of major infrastructure projects, which will have a big impact in our region.
They include:
- A multi-billion pound guarantee to advance the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point
- £10 million to be spent nationally to clear the backlog of repairs in schools plus investment to create new school places
- Further £250 million investment in superfast broadband
- £370 million fund to improve flood defences will increase every year to 2020. The Government has also agreed a deal on flood insurance.
- £10 billion of investment in road repairs, including pot holes
- Investment on widening roads, including the A303 which runs through Wiltshire to Cornwall
A303 improvements could be announced today
Motorists who use the A303 in Somerset and Wiltshire are hoping that it is on the list of government spending plans announced today.
Campaigners want improvements to ease bottlenecks near Stonehenge and in parts of Somerset where it drops to a single carriageway.

ROADS: Accident on A303 at Ilminster
The A303 at Ilminster in Somerset is closed in both directions because of an accident. It happened between the Southfield Roundabout and the A356
ROADS: A30 and A303 re-opened after accident
The A30 has re-opened between the A303 (Upottery) and the A35 Monkton Road in Honiton. The earlier accident involving a motorbike has now cleared and the traffic is easing.
ROADS: Update on A303 crash, including diversion
The A303 remains closed between Upottery in Devon and Ilminster in Somersest after a serious accident. It happened on the A30, which is closed between Stockland Hill to the A30/A303 junction. It's causing major queues in the area.
DIVERSION: Motorists are advised to follow the solid black circle symbol. Those travelling westbound should leave the A303 onto the A358 north to M5 J25 to head west via the M5. Those heading eastbound should leave the A30 at Stockland Hill and follow the above in reverse.
