Nautical tribute to Normandy veterans in Torbay

The region's D-Day 70th anniversary commemorations have finished in style this afternoon.

Veterans of the Normandy landings were guests of honour as a flotilla of a hundred boats paid them a nautical tribute.

The men were onboard the historic World War 2 vessel The Fairmile as it sailed across Tor Bay flanked by HMS Pembroke.

Normandy veterans will take the salute in Torbay harbour today (2pm) as more than 100 vessels form a flotilla in their honour.

The men who fought on D-Day will be on board the historic WW2 ship The Fairmile for the sail past. It's the Royal Navy's tribute to the veterans and forms the centrepiece of today's commemorations.

Veterans of D-Day marked the 70th anniversary with a wreath laying at Torquay harbour. The members of the Normandy Veterans Assn Torbay branch say they'll continue as a club despite the national organisation finishing after this year's commemorations.

The centre piece of the exhibition is an original map of the Normandy landing beaches that was given along with other top secret documents to the commanders of each landing craft.
