Dying businessman gives £3 million for cancer unit

A businessman who died from cancer has left millions of pounds to pay for a new treatment centre.

The money Robert White donated will fund a new radiotherapy unit at Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester. The new centre will cut journey times for patients who currently travel from far afield.

Over a period of six months as we went through the treatment of his illness, we'd been talking about the opportunities of providing funds to the NHS. After some thought and showing him the things we could potentially do, he came to my clinic and handed me an envelope with a NatWest cheque written out for £3 million - which was quite a day.

Police are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of a man from Dorchester who's been missing since Sunday 14 February.

18 year old Louis Harris was last since in the early hours when he was on Weymouth beach near to the Pavilion. He was walking up the steps towards the pier at 4:20am.

  • white
  • about five feet ten inches tall
  • slim build
  • last seen wearing a blue and white zipped hooded Lacoste top, a mainly white Fat Face checked shirt with a blue and red checked pattern, blue jeans and Vans shoes.

We are becoming increasingly concerned for Louis’ welfare as this behaviour is described as totally out of character for him.

He normally has good and regular contact with his family but they have not heard from him since he has gone missing and have not been able to contact him."

Three courts in the region to close

The Government's announced that three courts in the region will close, despite local opposition.

Crown Courts will no longer sit in Barnstaple or Dorchester, and the magistrates' court in Torquay will be shut by the end of the year as part of a programme to streamline the service. The future of the outdated building had been in doubt, but there had been hopes the court could remain elsewhere in the town.

Torbay's MP says he's worried it will mean witnesses and defendants having long journeys to get to courts in Newton Abbott and Plymouth.
