The number two at the Treasury, Danny Alexander, says improvements to transport links to the south west are a "high priority" of the government. He gave a strong hint that upgrades to the A303 - the main road alternative to the M4/M5 when travelling from London - would be in next month's autumn statement.

Attention is focusing in particular on a tunnel at Stonehenge, and completing the dual carriageway link via the Blackdown Hills.

But our political correspondent Bob Constantine understands that Devon and Somerset councils are working on a cheaper proposal to make smaller improvements, including overtaking lanes, widening of certain sections, and improved layout of junctions. The overall aim is to achieve an average 60 mile an hour journey time along the entire A303.

Dualling the A358, which links Ilminster with the M5 at Taunton, is still a possibility.
