More than 10,000 people have signed a petition to save the Devonport-based ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark as well as stopping perceived plans to cut 1,000 Royal Marines.

It means the Government will now have to officially respond.

Ministers are carrying out a review of the country's defence forces and insist any rumours at the moment are 'pure speculation'.

At the time of publishing, the petition, started by Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP Luke Pollard, had 11,555 signatures. If that number reaches 100,000, it will be discussed in parliament.
