Griff’s Great New Zealand Adventure

Series overview

British comedian Griff Rhys Jones is on an epic journey from the tip to the toe of New Zealand but has set himself a challenge to avoid Highway One and journey the Kiwi roads less travelled.

Episode 1

In this episode, he begins his trip at the very northern point of New Zealand, Cape Reinga, and is welcomed by a Maori chief of the region and challenged to make himself at home. Griff uses this challenge to discover the many people who have ‘made themselves at home’ in New Zealand, including Maori, English whalers, missionaries, and modern visitors.

Griff slides his way down the Te Paki sand dunes of the north, avoiding the rising tide while driving down 90-mile Beach, and ending in Russell on the Bay of Plenty.  Here he goes fishing and learns of the whalers and sealers who came to “The Hellhole of The Pacific”. After Russell, Griff heads to Kaipara Bay to see one of the great sights of the north isle, Gibbs Farm.  This farm is an outdoor giant art gallery displaying some of the finest sculpture on earth, against magnificent green rolling hills.  From there Griff heads to a local Maori Iwi, or tribe, to be welcomed into Maori culture. Griff speaks from the heart to his Maori hosts about his Welsh upbringing, and they in turn sing God Save The Queen in Maori to make him feel at home.

Finally, Griff arrives in Auckland where local comedian and raconteur Ben Hurley fills Griff in on what is uniquely Kiwi, and what is an import. Surprisingly Ben claims fish and chips for the Kiwis!  Griff climbs Auckland tower to end the episode and looks out over Auckland from its iconic Sky Tower looking to his next adventure heading south.
