Series overview
Following the success of his French Adventure, chef James Martin is setting off on the next leg of his journey - the U S of A.
This is a trip that James has been longing to take and it’s a road trip as road trips are meant to be! He’ll travel with a range of different machines, from a classic Harley Davidson to an Aston Martin, a giant Pickup Truck and a 70s Pontiac.
Starting in California, James and his trusty crew will head down the West Coast taking in the Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles, before swinging inland and heading for Texas. He’ll stop off at Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Dallas before his travels see him heading across the American South. In Louisiana, James experiences everything Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Avery Island and The Sugar Belt have to offer. Finally he heads to the North East, to Philadelphia, Salem, Boston and the Hamptons, ending the epic trip in New York.
By exploring food which is more surprising, exciting, diverse and enthralling than any of us imagine, James will get under the skin of a nation perhaps more troubled and divided than it has been for a generation, discovering that it can still amaze the spirited traveller with a dizzying range of fantastic cuisine and bucket list experiences… many of which James has a go at. From Surfing on the Pacific Coast to line dancing, ranch skills to baseball, James tries his hand at classic All-American pastimes.
From the exquisite craft of Thomas Keller in California or Daniel Boulud in New York, to American classics like barbecued ribs, giant steaks and even a whole smoked cow’s head, James conjures up a vision of the food scene in the USA both unexpected and enthralling, adding his own versions of classic dishes both on the road and back in his UK kitchen.
Episode 1 - Napa - Monday 12 February
James Martin starts his American Adventure with a visit to one of his favourite places in the USA: The Napa Valley. First, he drops into one of the best food and drink markets in California before cooking with some delicious local produce at a stunning vineyard. James gets an exclusive look at the brand new kitchen at one of the world’s best restaurants “The French Laundry” and tours their stunning kitchen garden with chef and owner Thomas Keller. A visit to The Napa Valley wouldn’t be complete without blending your own wine so James makes his own red to bring back home with him. James takes inspiration from Napa’s bountiful larder to cook California inspired food back in the UK.
Episode 2 -Santa Cruz- Tuesday 13 February
James Martin’s American Adventure continues with a cruise along California’s Pacific Coast. James rides his motorcycle through the coastal city of Santa Cruz, taking in the fertile nature of the local farmland along the way. James shops at a local farmers’ market before cooking his own recipes on a family run artichoke farm. But James couldn’t leave before trying his hand at surfing, only to be upstaged by a surfing dog! James also uses the area’s rich farming heritage as inspiration to cook California style back at home in the UK.
Episode 3 - San Francisco - Wednesday 14 February
James Martin’s American Adventure takes the chef to the city of San Francisco. James arrives on a boat through the bay before cooking on the great historic warship the SS Jeremiah O’Brien. James takes a walk on foot through San Francisco’s famous Chinatown and explores the many food stores offering unusual ingredients to the thousands of shoppers that visit every day. And for those with a sweet tooth, we get an exclusive look at the Ghiradelli Chocolate Festival which celebrates the sweet stuff in a uniquely Californian way.
Episode 4 - Sonoma - Thursday 15 February
A trip to California wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the famous vineyards of Sonoma County. James Martin continues his American Adventure with a drive on his much-loved Harley to visit to a unique winery and farm where he cooks two beautiful dishes using local ingredients. James also visits Single Thread, a farm and restaurant run by a passionate husband and wife team, where he is totally overwhelmed by the culinary offerings. But James’ adventure isn’t just about food, he also visits a Tibetan artist who is undertaking a breath-taking five-year long ceremonial painting. A truly magical experience.
Episode 5 - Sonoma Raceway - Friday 16 February
James Martin continues his American Adventure with a high-octane pit stop at the world famous Sonoma Raceway. Nestled in amongst Sonoma’s vineyards, James discovers the preparations for the IndyCar season finale and gets driven around the track by the King of American motorsport Mario Andretti. James cooks trackside before visiting a new foodie Sonoma hotspot, simply called Shed. After a wholesome lunch made with only the best local ingredients, James gets invited to Mario’s nearby vineyard for a glass of wine and to discuss the thrills and spills of motorsport.
