Appropriate Adult

Series overview

The routine life of Gloucester housewife Janet Leach is dramatically transformed when she asked by police to sit in as ‘appropriate adult’ on interviews with a man they have arrested. That man is serial killer Fred West.

Episode 2

With Janet Leach no longer involved in the police interviews, Fred West refuses to speak to the police.

His wife Rosemary is similarly uncooperative. Janet receives a call asking her to resume as West’s appropriate adult. Fred West appears to be delighted and resumes co-operation with the police. But this co-operation is, once again, on his own terms.

As the police continue to search the Wests’ house and remote country locations for missing victims, West becomes increasingly pre-occupied with one in particular – Anna McFall – and Janet becomes aware of her physical resemblance to Anna. The police then bring the interviews with Fred West to a close, and charges are also brought against Rosemary. Fred West, sent to await trial in prison, makes contact with Janet.

Their relationship enters a new phase as Janet embarks on a series of visits to Fred West in prison, with the intention of persuading him to divulge information about other victims and the involvement of Rosemary West in the crimes. The remains of Anna McFall are found, and Fred suggests to Janet her resemblance to Anna is highly significant to him.

As Janet tries to persuade Fred to break with Rosemary and reveal the whole truth, she becomes ever more closely involved with him – an involvement which, ultimately, proves to have shattering consequences for her at the trial of Rosemary West.
