Episode 3
Jason arrives at Marcella’s and delivers some news that enters her into a fugue.  When she comes back round, Jason is badly injured and she recognises that she has to categorically deal with the fugues.
The team get an ID on Luke Howell. Marcella and LeAnn head to his foster mother’s and discover that he was meeting a friend called Andrew on the night of his disappearance. Then Marcella attends his autopsy and finds that he also had wooden discs inserted into his body. But these discs are slightly different.  Marcella speaks to a specialist who is perplexed about the discs.
Marcella gets an ID on Andrew and heads to talk to him at a known brothel. He confirms that he was with Luke on the night of his disappearance. Marcella questions whether Luke was in the same line of work as Andrew. Marcella shows Andrew pictures of the suspects in the case and asks if he recognises them. Andrew points out one.
The results from Luke’s autopsy show that he was killed by a failed lobotomy. The team discuss why a lobotomy would be used to kill the victims whilst also contemplating the discs found inside the victims. They also have to deal with Phil Dawkins again.
Marcella attends Edward’s school for an art event. Whilst there she talks to Edward about why he was scared when he left Leo alone but before she can get an answer Jane comes over to have a discreet chat. She tells Marcella that Edward called Jane’s daughter Samantha to tell her that about an event that occured. Marcella is more shocked to discover that Edward is in a relationship with Samantha than the worrying event that took place. Later, Edward explains that what happened was an accident.
Marcella goes to visit the hypnotist that Becky recommended. Marcella tries to relive the moment she discovered Juliet. In her hypnosis induced memory, she approaches the door to the room where Juliet lies but the door slams shut. Helen recommends that at their next session they try a more recent fugue and work their way back to Juliet’s death.
Marcella receives a call from the specialist who has investigated the discs further. He’s now come to the conclusion that the discs are there to protect.
As Rav and Marcella discuss how the evidence of their case doesn’t point to the work of a paedophile killer, a grief stricken and vengeful Phil follows Edward as he heads to school.
Vince apologises to Maya for his behaviour at the charity event and has a plan to make the label of him as a greedy businessman disappear. At an assembled press gathering at his warehouse, Vince puts his plan into action but the plan hugely backfires. Later, as Maya speaks with Tim, she tells him that her husband is becoming a liability.
Gail notices that Joel is trying to communicate with her via his tapping finger. She alerts her boss, Dr. Lewis to the situation but when she takes her in to see Joel communicate, he doesn’t move his finger. Dr. Lewis tells Gail that she’s probably reading too much into a muscle spasm. But when Dr. Lewis leaves the room, Joel begins tapping his finger again.
Series overview
Original multi-layered ITV crime drama series Marcella, written by internationally renowned screenwriter and novelist Hans Rosenfeldt (The Bridge) and starring International Emmy award winning Anna Friel (The Girlfriend Experience, Broken, American Odyssey) returns to ITV.
Returning alongside Anna Friel as the lead Marcella, in the highly praised drama are Ray Panthaki (One Crazy Thing), Nicholas Pinnock (Fortitude, Guerrilla), Jamie Bamber (Fearless, NCIS) and Jack Doolan (White Gold).  New cast members are also welcomed; Nigel Planer (Episodes, Comic Strip Presents, The Young Ones), Keith Allen (Eddie The Eagle, My Mad Fat Diary), Sophia Brown (Beauty & The Beast, Clique, Disobedience), Peter Sullivan (Cuffs, Critical, The Borgias), Jason Hughes (Three Girls, Midsomer Murders), Victoria Smurfit (Once Upon A Time, Trial & Retribution, The Beach), Yolanda Kettle (The Crown, Love Nina), Josh Herdman (Harry Potter) and Harriet Cains (Line of Duty, Safe House).
The eight-part series is once again set in contemporary London and the new series unfolds in the unique style of Rosenfeldt’s Nordic style.  Interweaving storylines and characters from all different walks of life and backgrounds will lead the audiences on a complex and emotional journey and keep them guessing until the very end.
The story begins with the discovery of a body inside a wall. The body is clothed in a school blazer and surrounded by soft toys; a devastated Marcella soon works out that the body is that of schoolboy Leo Priestley, who was abducted a few years beforehand and a friend of Marcella’s son, Edward.
A task-force is quickly pulled together by newly promoted DCI, Tim and we are introduced to a new member of the team, LeAnn.  As the investigation progresses, we’re introduced to a number of new characters – a former famous musician Reg and his manager and friend Alan; edgy businessman Vince Whitman and his charity boss wife Maya; a previously convicted criminal Phil Dawkins; sister and brother Gail and Eric; and Becky, the new girlfriend of Marcella’s ex-husband.
Whilst the storylines entwine, Marcella is still battling with her ongoing sporadic fugue states which she struggles to come to terms with and is getting increasingly worried about the effects it is having on her and her family around her.
