Series overview

The ‘most spectacular’ British crime of the decade has been dramatised by acclaimed BAFTA winning screenwriter Jeff Pope.

Hatton Garden depicts the audacious jewellery, gold and cash burglary at the heart of London’s diamond district executed by an elderly gang of career criminals across the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in April 2015.

Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Award winner Timothy Spall OBE, Olivier award-winning actor Kenneth Cranham and BAFTA winner Brían F. O’Byrne play leading roles. Fellow distinguished actors David Hayman, Alex Norton, Geoff Bell join them to play the men responsible for the daring raid. Ian Puleston-Davies and Nasser Memarzia also star.

The 4 x 60-minute drama tells the story of how the men pulled off the heist which was considered in a class of its own in terms of scale and ambition, and the extraordinary level of planning, preparation and organisation required to penetrate the vault of the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit Company.

Co-written with Terry Winsor (Hot Money, Danielle Cable: Eyewitness, Essex Boys), and directed by Paul Whittington (Little Boy Blue, The Moorside, Cilla, Mrs Biggs), Hatton Garden shows how the gang meticulously planned the raid, the tensions amongst the group, the loss of livelihoods suffered by the box holders and the complex police operation that captured the gang.

Episode 3

Two days have passed since the gang escaped from the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit Vault with millions in stolen goods, and everyone is just arriving back to work on the Tuesday morning after the long Easter weekend, when the burglary is discovered by a security guard walking into the vault to see the havoc left behind.

The gang, now led by Terry Perkins (Timothy Spall), has already carried out their first divvy-up of the haul and are now faced with the long wait until the inevitable police investigation has died down, before they can meet up again. But any chance of the group sticking to that plan disappears when Reader (Kenneth Cranham), the mastermind behind the raid who walked away after the failure of night one, discovers that they went back in without him. He desperately chases Perkins, Jones (David Hayman), Collins (Alex Norton) and Basil (Brían F. O’Byrne) for a way to get his hands on a slice of the proceeds but is shut out and is left feeling frustrated, empty-handed, and vengeful.

With newspapers reporting that foreign gangsters and young high-tech burglars could have been responsible for the heist, the gang revel in the fact that no one suspects them and are united in the belief that it will all be smooth sailing from here.

We follow a box holder who goes through the agonising discovery that his was one of the boxes robbed, and that his entire stock and cash reserves have gone. Uninsured, he faces ruin. The Flying Squad start to investigate under the command of DCI Paul Johnson (Jonah Russell). His team uncovers some crucial CCTV footage the gang were unaware of. But in the back of his mind, he knows that it will be the gang’s mistakes that will be their undoing rather than anything he can do. So he must wait. As long as the gang stays away from each other they will be safe. But Reader won’t let things go.
