Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip

Series overview

Three big egos, one small van. Gordon, Gino and Fred pack up their camper van once again and head off on a European adventure, but this time it’s personal as each episode takes us on a tour of their cherished homelands, each of them with a special occasion to prepare for. With three countries, three weeks and three coqs au vin in close confinement what could possibly go wrong?

Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix hit the road to find out which of their countries does it best and immerse themselves in the most extreme adventures, competing to find the best ingredients from some of the most stunning locations. The three-part series begins in Italy as Gordon and Fred join forces to help Gino put on a sumptuous feast for a very unique wedding blessing on the beach. In France the threesome will help deliver the first oyster festival. The Scottish leg of the journey will see them taking part in some highland fun and games. This is food on tour like never before, but will it be a case of too many cooks?

Episode 3

Three big egos, one small van. Gordon, Gino and Fred pack up their camper van once again and head off on a European adventure, but this time it’s personal as each episode takes us on a tour of their cherished homelands, each of them with a special feast to prepare for. With three countries, three weeks and three ‘coqs au vin’ in close confinement what could possibly go wrong?

In the third episode of the series the trio head to Scotland as Gordon prepares to cook a feast for the chief of Clan Ramsay and his esteemed friends. As they tour the country picking up ingredients, Gordon shows the others how to dress like real Scotsmen. They go in search of amazing Scottish beef, go hunting for scallops and attempt some Highland Games, with hilarious results.

As they set off in Gordon’s Land Rover, he explains that if the meal he is planning is successful, he will be officially welcomed into Clan Ramsay, so he needs everything to be perfect.

They begin their journey at Easdale, gateway to the Isle of Mull, looking for scallops. Gordon hands out wetsuits for them to swim to the scallop boat but the other guys can’t hack the freezing cold water, so they borrow a RIB instead. Once at the boat they meet Guy Grieve, an expert in the art of hand diving for scallops. Gordon cooks and tries out the recipe he is planning to cook for the feast.

After getting back to dry land, they drive to Edinburgh where they are fitted out in kilts at Kinloch Anderson and Gino falls in love with a beaver-style sporran.

Next stop for the trio is a farm, where they meet the butcher who gives Gordon a cut of fillet and some haggis. They then head to the Ceres Highland Games, but Gino reveals that he is not looking forward to taking part.

He says: “They lift up trees, the best I can lift up is a bonsai. I’m going to look like a plonker.”

Gordon agrees that the games might be daunting for his travelling companions. The trio attempt a few of the games including the shot put, but Fred is disqualified for overstepping the mark.

Next, Gordon takes Gino and Fred fly fishing to catch some salmon. Gino is alarmed as Gordon drives their car straight down the river before they all get out, don waders and get knee deep in the water with their rods.  Gordon tries his best to teach the others what to do, but Gino gets fed up and leaves so they decide to cut their losses and call a fishmonger.

After gathering all their ingredients, the trio arrive at the final stop on their tour, Brechin Castle, which is the seat of Earl Dalhousie, the clan chieftain of Clan Ramsay, and the venue for the feast.

Gino helps Gordon in the kitchen but a row soon breaks out when Gordon accuses Gino of damaging the scallops as he opens them. The pair move onto making fresh ravioli, but more bickering ensues about whose method is the best.

Meanwhile Fred is laying the table, arranging the cutlery and briefing the waiting staff about how he expects them to greet the guests.

As the dinner gets underway things heat up in the kitchen as the pressure mounts to get the perfect meal served.

Gordon and Gino work together though and the meal is served and very well received. Afterwards Gordon comes out to meet the guests and is thanked by the chief of the clan. He adds: “To be toasted in amongst that kind of ceremony was quite humbling.”

Later, as the party gets going, Gordon is presented with a crest and officially invited into the Ramsay clan.
