Series overview

Set in 1969, the new series of ITV’s Inspector Morse prequel sees acclaimed actor Shaun Evans return as DS Endeavour Morse.

Produced by leading drama indie Mammoth Screen in a co-production with Masterpiece, each story in the highly-anticipated sixth series will once again be written by series creator Russell Lewis who has penned each of the 23 screenplays to date.

Alongside Evans, the new series will see celebrated stage and screen actor Roger Allam return as DI Fred Thursday, alongside Anton Lesser as CS Reginald Bright, Sean Rigby as DS Jim Strange, James Bradshaw as Dr Max DeBryn, Sara Vickers as Joan Thursday, Abigail Thaw as Dorothea Frazil and Caroline O’Neill as Win Thursday.

With the old Cowley team now scattered across Oxfordshire, Endeavour has reluctantly settled into a sedate way of life in an isolated countryside outpost. An uncomfortable Thursday also has a new role at the forbidding Castle Gate station, joining former adversary DCI Ronnie Box and his new sidekick DS Alan Jago.

Meanwhile, Strange has taken on a management role with Division, while Bright has been relegated to the Traffic department. The Summer of Love is well and truly over, and 1969 promises to be darker and more challenging than ever. However, despite their separation, the tragic murder of DC George Fancy still hangs over them both collectively and individually, with the case remaining unresolved.

Filmed in and around Oxford, the new films will be executive produced by Mammoth Screen’s Damien Timmer, alongside writer and creator Russell Lewis and WGBH’s Rebecca Eaton. Deanne Cunningham has produced the series whilst Johnny Kenton, Shaun Evans, Leanne Welham and Jamie Donoughue act as directors.

Episode 3 - Confection

The murder of renowned chocolate factory owner Greville Creswell during a local hunt leads Endeavour to the sleepy village of Chigton Green. The chocolate box cottages and idyllic surroundings might seem perfect, but not all is as it first appears.

Meanwhile, when local couple Mandy-Jane and Rennett Bell are found dead from gunshot wounds, Thursday’s initial assumptions about a spurned husband and a doomed affair look likely. But the discovery of a Happy Family collectible card on one of the bodies - seemingly linking the deaths back to Creswell – appear to be a sign left by the killer.

When Endeavour learns of a vicious campaign of gossip and rumour – which has utilised the same collectible cards - it seems likely that the two are connected.  One of the targets – beautiful single mother Isla Fairford – captures Endeavour’s attention and gives him food for thought about the future.
