Episode 4 – Brokeback Mountain

In episode four, the guys head to Texas to check out the beef, bourbon, BBQs and cowboys.

Gordon says: “There is nowhere on the planet that does a BBQ like Texas.”  So their first stop is a BBQ restaurant voted one of the best in the world.

After being given a guided tour around the eatery and their enormous grills, Gordon, Gino and Fred set off to the woods to find the trees which make the best fuel and flavor for a true Texan BBQ.

They meet a lumberjack who gives them a crash course in felling the trees. Gordon is a natural swinging the axe but one of the lumberjacks takes one look at Fred and tells him: “We never cut wood in pink shorts. Or any shorts really.”

Gino tells Fred: “Don’t listen, I think you look really pretty.”

Gino attempts to chop into a trunk but doesn’t have much luck, with the lumberjack telling him: “My daughter can chop better than that.” Gordon takes over but finds it is much harder than it looks, before discovering the lumberjacks actually use chainsaws….

To cool off, the three then head for a dip in the Blue Hole, a natural pool, and it isn’t long before Gino decides to break the ‘no skinny-dipping’ rule.

Next Gordon, Gino and Fred get back in Betty and head to the Trinity River where they board a boat to go in search of an Alligator Gar, a huge fish weighing in at around 200lbs with razor sharp teeth.

Gordon has been fishing since he was young, so he is confident he will be the first to catch a fish but suddenly Gino gets a surprise bite and reels in the prize.

Gino says: “To have a big fish like that on the line is quite exciting. To be able to beat Gordon is just another win.”

As the three prepare to bed down in a hunting lodge, Gordon raids the tin cupboard and starts to make bean stew. He says: “This is one of the most exciting trips I have been on because Texas is all about manhood and sharing it with Gino and Fred, it’s nice to bring their inner manhood out.”

The next day the trio arrive in the state capital, Austin, and visit Allen’s Boots, to get kitted out as cowboys before going to the Little Longhorn Saloon for a game of chicken shit bingo. The game has been played at the saloon for 25 years and involves a chicken wandering across a table of numbers and if she poops on your number, you win. After Gino gets lucky and scoops the prize, they go back inside for a spot of country dancing.

As their trip draws to a close the guys watch a rodeo and cook up an amazing authentic last-supper BBQ, using all the Texan tricks they’ve learnt along the way.

Gordon says: “I think the misconception back home with American cuisine is that it’s big and bold and tasteless. But delve in off the beaten track, there’s a passion there beyond belief…when you find it, it’s beautiful.”

Gino says: “As far as a trip, an experience, is concerned, this has been the best trip ever.”

Fred says: “I’m just going to miss the boys because I genuinely love those guys.”
