Save Money: Good Health

Series overview

Save Money Good Health is back for a brand new series looking at ways to spend it well on your health.

Journalist Sian Williams and Doctor Ranj Singh unpack how to get the best for your money when it comes to our biggest health concerns; right through from sleep and ageing to common illnesses and not forgetting some of those more embarrassing problems and weigh up what's in our shopping baskets from medicine cupboard essentials to the latest gadgets and off the shelf products.

Episode 4

This week we’re focusing on gut health - from the latest probiotics to off the shelf remedies for tummy problems.

Sian joins up with microbiologist Dr Lindsay Hall to look at home bacteria-testing kits. Sian turns guinea pig to check out her microbe levels. Both kits had a hefty price tag, but do they reveal anything interesting? She’ll also look at probiotics and gut enhanced products to investigate whether the £750 million we spend on them every year is money well spent or whether food can do the same job at a fraction of the cost.

Doctor Ranj continues the gut health theme by looking at digestive ailments such as acid reflux and indigestion. Nearly 80% of British adults suffer from some type of gut or digestive disorder. Which are the best over the counter products to prevent tummy problems and treat the symptoms?

And we’ll also look at food-poisoning and how to fight germ warfare in our own kitchen. Verity Mann from the Good Housekeeping Institute gives us her essential and affordable guide to keeping bugs at bay.
We're continuing to shop around for treatments to those embarrassing problems so you don't have to. This time, we're tackling a painful condition: ingrown toenails.

And not forgetting, our essential weekly guide to vitamin and mineral supplements which this week is Vitamin D.
