Series overview

Martin Clunes returns to play the nation’s favourite grumpy medic in a brand new series of Doc Martin for ITV.

He stars as Dr Martin Ellingham, the GP with a brusque bedside manner and a phobia of blood, in eight new episodes of the successful drama produced by Buffalo Pictures, and set in the idyllic hamlet of Portwenn in Cornwall.

Picturesque Port Isaac provides the beautiful backdrop for the popular series, with all regular members of the cast reprising their roles.

Caroline Catz plays Doc Martin’s wife, Louisa Ellingham, who has resigned from her job as headmistress at the local school to pursue a new career in child counselling.

Returning to this ninth series, Dame Eileen Atkins plays Doc Martin’s formidable Aunt Ruth. Ian McNeice is back to play Bert Large, with Joe Absolom as his son Al. John Marquez is PC Joe Penhale, Jessica Ransom is the doctor’s receptionist Morwenna Newcross and Selina Cadell is pharmacist Mrs Tishell.

They are joined by special guest stars Danny Huston, Conleth Hill, Caroline Quentin and Tom Conti. Danny plays Robert Brooke, a man who is shot by a farmer who thinks he is stealing eggs. Caroline returns to the series to star as vet Angela Sim, Conleth plays a GP who comes to assess Martin and Tom Conti plays Bernard  Newton, an eminent surgeon who is also assessing the Doc.

Episode 4: Paint It Black

Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill (Lord Varys) guest stars in the episode as Dr Edward Mullen, who arrives at the surgery for Dr Martin Ellingham’s (Martin Clunes) his second GMC assessment.

A mock surgery has been arranged with patients suffering fake illnesses for the Doc to diagnose. But it is a complete shambles, with Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) revealing to Martin one of the pretend illnesses, another patient not remembering hers, and the third patient Martin diagnosing with a real medical condition. The assessment comes to an abrupt end with Martin dismissing Dr. Mullen and focusing on his  real patients.

Meanwhile, Al(Joe Absolom) and Bert (Ian McNeice) are preparing the pub ahead of owner Ken Hollister’s (Clive Russell) return after recovering from a major operation. They are surprised to learn that he wants to sell the pub. They negotiate a deal with Ken to continue to manage the pub, but before it can be secured Ken dies.

Penhale (John Marquez) is taken by surprise when Mark Mylow, (Stewart Wright) his predecessor, returns and tries to take charge. There is a spate of farming robberies across the South West, which Mark is overseeing from Exeter, and he has been sent down to investigate. This isn’t the main motivation for his visit though; Mark has a medical condition he is only willing to see the Doc about.

Buddy has gone missing and Louisa is scouring the village to try to find him. She’s relieved to discover he’s taken up residence with the new Funeral Director, Julia Pote,( Olivia Poulet) and her dog Shelly.

This episode is written by Andrew Rattenbury, the producer is Philippa Braithwaite, the director is Charlie Palmer and the executive producer is Mark Crowdy.
