Series overview

Martin Clunes returns to play the nation’s favourite grumpy medic in a brand new series of Doc Martin for ITV.

He stars as Dr Martin Ellingham, the GP with a brusque bedside manner and a phobia of blood, in eight new episodes of the successful drama produced by Buffalo Pictures, and set in the idyllic hamlet of Portwenn in Cornwall.

Picturesque Port Isaac provides the beautiful backdrop for the popular series, with all regular members of the cast reprising their roles.

Caroline Catz plays Doc Martin’s wife, Louisa Ellingham, who has resigned from her job as headmistress at the local school to pursue a new career in child counselling.

Returning to this ninth series, Dame Eileen Atkins plays Doc Martin’s formidable Aunt Ruth. Ian McNeice is back to play Bert Large, with Joe Absolom as his son Al. John Marquez is PC Joe Penhale, Jessica Ransom is the doctor’s receptionist Morwenna Newcross and Selina Cadell is pharmacist Mrs Tishell.

They are joined by special guest stars Danny Huston, Conleth Hill, Caroline Quentin and Tom Conti. Danny plays Robert Brooke, a man who is shot by a farmer who thinks he is stealing eggs. Caroline returns to the series to star as vet Angela Sim, Conleth plays a GP who comes to assess Martin and Tom Conti plays Bernard  Newton, an eminent surgeon who is also assessing the Doc.

Episode 6: Equilibrium

Martin and Louisa have their first fertility consultation with Dr Emma Ryder (Lucy Russell). Well aware that Martin is able to perform the tests himself, she reminds him that he is the patient now, not the doctor.

Dr Edward Mullen (Conleth Hill) returns to the surgery, this time not to assess Martin, but rather ask for advice on his own medical matter. Julia Pote (Olivia Poulet) is also back to see Martin for an allergy profile after her sudden allergic response and is concerned when Martin uncovers she has pernicious anaemia too.

A case of vandalism at a local surf school is reported and PC Joe Penhale (John Marquez) is on the case. On arrival at the beach Penhale realises he went to school with Nathan Fowler, (James Lance) who runs the surf school with his heavily pregnant wife Mags (Susannah Fielding). Penhale offers to help Nathan optimise his security, to prevent this from happening again. As a thank you, Nathan offers Penhale a surf lesson. Penhale doesn’t think he’s cut out to be a surf dude, but he agrees to give it a go, with disastrous results.

Meanwhile Louisa’s having the phlebotomy room painted, to prepare for her first supervised counselling session. The painter, Paul, (Tom Glenister) seems to have a personal hygiene problem, and is leaving a nasty odour around the place. The Doc diagnoses excessive sweating, and offers to treat him. Martin can’t believe  that Paul’s girlfriend Ally (Sofia Oxenham) hasn’t noticed the odour until an examination reveals she has nasal polyps. After Martin removes them she can suddenly smell her boyfriend’s problem. Louisa’s first session doesn’t end well when Professor Sam Bradman  (John Hollingworth) collapses during the session with sciatica.

The new owner of the Crab and Lobster, Caitlin Morgan, (Angela Curran) decides that Al (Joe Absolom) should work at her convenience store. Ever the entrepreneur, Al sets up a street food stall using the store’s produce which is past its best. Bert (Ian McNeice) is feeling the pressure from Caitlin, and urges Al to come back to the pub. But Al is enjoying his booming new business venture until Caitlin finds out what he has been doing behind her back.

Morwenna’s (Jessica Ransom) First Aid Responder beeper goes off and with the Doc away she leaps into action, pedalling her bike to the beach as fast as she can. Mags Fowler has gone into labour and her husband Nathan has had an accident while surfing. Morwenna takes charge of the medical emergency until the doc arrives to deliver the baby.

The episode is written by Chris Reddy, the producer is Philippa Braithwaite, the director is Charlie Palmer and the executive producer is Mark Crowdy.
