Gorillaz are back fighting for British Group once again, having won in 2018, and Giggs receives his first ever BRIT nomination for British Male, but has stiff competition from George Ezra, Sam Smith, Aphex Twin and Craig David.

About The BRIT Awards – British Record Industry Trust
The BRIT (British Record Industry Trust) Awards are organised by the BPI – the record labels’ association that promotes British music. The BPI’s membership is made up of over 400 independent labels as well as the UK’s three major record companies – collectively they account for around 85 per cent of the music consumed in the UK and around one in eight of all the artist albums sold around the world.
The BRIT Awards 2019 with Mastercard will be the 39th BRIT Awards, which has raised more than £21m for The BRIT Trust charity, whose main beneficiaries are the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and other selected charities which match the mission criteria.
Over 8,000 young people have been given free education and the opportunity to enter the BRIT School since its opening in 1991 and more than 10,000 children and adults have been helped by the extraordinary music therapy work carried out by Nordoff-Robbins.
In 2017, The BRIT Awards underwent a major review of its Voting Academy, in a move designed to refresh the Academy with as diverse a range of music experts as possible to achieve a greater gender balance, as well as increased BAME representation. As part of the review, the BPI appointed a Diversity Advisory Committee to advise on the Voting Academy’s voting structures and breakdown, overseen by BPI Chairman Ged Doherty and BRITs Chairman and Chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK & Ireland Jason Iley. The invitee list for the Voting Academy is made up of all areas of music throughout the UK, including artists, business, retailers, promoters, agents, publishers, labels, producers and media, with approx 1000 individuals invited each year. As a result of the review, all participating organisations were encouraged to reflect a 50/50 male/female balance and to achieve a minimum 20% BAME representation in their voters.
In 2017 the Voting Academy achieved a 53/48% m/f split and 21% BAME representation. In 2018, the gender split remained the same, but BAME representation increased to 24%. In 2019, the m/f split is 49.8/50.2%, with BAME representation up to 25%.
In 2018, out of 64 nominations across the board (excl. Global Success): 48% related to female artists (increase of 10% from 2017) and 42% were or featured BAME artists.
