ITV commissions new Theresa May documentary

ITV and The Slate Works have announced a brand new documentary exploring Theresa May's premiership, with unique access to the former Prime Minister which includes the most frank and revealing account of her period in office.

Theresa May: The Accidental PM (w/t), 1x60, is due to air in June and  delves inside No10 during her chaotic three years in office, having taken power after David Cameron's resignation following the Brexit referendum in 2016, and examines her treatment by some from within her own cabinet and many more from her own back benchers.

Featuring contributions from key advisors and politicians - from friends and opponents alike - including Suella Braverman, Gavin Barwell and Amber Rudd, the programme provides a personal insight into her time in office, including what it’s like to be a woman Prime Minister as well as her ascent to power.

The documentary follows her political career from being elected in 1997, looking into the life of a woman who famously claimed the "naughtiest" thing she ever did was run through fields of wheat when she was a child.

It reveals how she came to power in 2016, the snap General Election of 2017 leading to a hung Parliament, the Government's Brexit negotiations, as well as the votes of no confidence and the rejection of her draft withdrawal agreements. It also covers the Grenfell disaster, the Windrush scandal and her relationship with President Trump - as well as her life after power as an outspoken backbencher, before announcing she would be stepping down as Maidenhead MP at the next election.

Woven into the film will be shots at home with husband Phillip, rarely seen archive footage and insights into the knock-on effects of a premiership conducted in a time before Covid, before Boris Johnson, Liz Truss's disastrous 49 days in power and the current incumbent Rishi Sunak's economic troubles - while the country is less than five years on from her emotional resignation outside No10.

The documentary is produced and directed by Sam Collyns and Executive Produced by Neil Grant and Adam Wishart.

Neil Grant, Executive Producer for The Slate Works, says:

“Theresa May has never given access like this before. Full, frank and revelatory, this is a rare insight into power and politics at a time of turmoil, turbulence and betrayal.”

Tom Giles, Controller of Current Affairs for ITV, says:

"We wanted to produce a film that not only provides a vivid insight into a tumultuous period of recent British history, with ramifications that are still continuing, but that explores a woman who became a leading figure in British politics  in over a quarter of a century as MP, Party Chairman, Home Secretary and Prime Minister."
