Mr Bates vs the Post Office: The Real Story

In the early 2000’s The Post Office rolled out a new IT system called Horizon. It was meant to make the lives of Subpostmasters easier. But Horizon had hidden faults.  Subpostmasters (SPMs) using it discovered losses in their accounts. SPMs would call the PO helpline, only to be told they were ‘the only one’ to be experiencing these issues. They weren’t. Over several years the Post Office accused them of theft and sent some to jail. Now, after years of campaigning, Subpostmasters who’ve been living with criminal convictions are getting justice and their convictions quashed. While the wait for compensation continues.

Mr Bates vs the Post Office: The Real Story is based on intimate interviews with key protagonists, clips from the drama, archive from the time and specially shot material of the actual locations to piece together the impact of these appalling events on the Subpostmasters themselves.

Barry Humphries: The Last Laugh

In this Christmas special documentary a host of top stars reflect on the life and comedy of Barry Humphries - AKA Dame Edna Everage - a trailblazer and a hellraiser whose road to worldwide fame was far from easy.

In December 2023, the legendary comic is being honoured with a state memorial at the Sydney Opera house, and ITV1 pays its own tribute with friends and fans including Sharon Osbourne, Jonathan Ross, Nick Cave, Jason Donovan, Joan Bakewell, Dara Ó Briain, Lord Jeffrey Archer and more.

Barry Humphries: The Last Laugh relives classic moments from his signature characters, Dame Edna and Sir Les Patterson, as well as uncovering gems from the many interviews Barry gave as himself, which were often illuminating and equally hilarious.

Following his death in April, this brand new ITV1 documentary aims to offer an intimate, personal and honest look back at the life and work of one of the funniest and most iconic performers of our times. Adored by millions, but perhaps known by few, Barry constantly shifted the lines between where the characters ended and his own personality began, making it a challenge for interviewers to get under the skin of the man himself.

The show tracks his career from his upbringing in suburban Melbourne, to taking his new act Edna Everage to Sydney in the 1950s, where it didn't always go down well. But it was after Barry moved to London that he found success with audiences.

This is a MultiStory Media production for ITV1 and ITVX

The Real Nolly

The Real Nolly, with exclusive access to her personal papers, never-before-seen pictures and interviews with those who knew her best, explores the life of Noele Gordon.

Before Crossroads, she was a star on the stage in the 1940s; she was also the first woman ever to be broadcast in colour in an experiment by TV pioneer John Logie Baird. She was asked to go to New York for a year, where she studied TV production and made hours of notes on US TV. She was a continuity announcer and acted in radio shows, too. She came back to the UK to help set up Associated Television as a TV executive and established daytime TV; she was a pioneer in the world of TV which was run by men.

The film discusses the remarkable soap opera set in Crossroads Motel in the Midlands. The programme ran from 1964 to 1988, but it’s famous for the period when Noele Gordon was the star. It included remarkable scenes – for instance, when Meg got married, more than 10,000 fans turned up to watch the filming at Birmingham Cathedral, so they put that in the episode. It is almost inconceivable that a soap could have generated such excitement over just an ‘ordinary’ motel owner. Larry Grayson – the famous TV presenter – even drove the Rolls Royce!

Nolly’s sacking from Crossroads was a devastating blow to her, but she took to the stage again, aged 61, in the musical Gypsy. Sadly, only a few years later, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer and passed away. Speaking with those who were close to her, we discover who she was, hear about the heartbreak in her life and learn what gave her the steely determination to keep going. The Real Nolly is a love letter to a true star who is still much missed by friends and fans alike and also still hugely admired.

Helena Bonham Carter – who stars as Nolly in the drama – narrates the documentary.

The Real Nolly is a Multistory Media production.
