Galopin Des Champs sets sights on Cheltenham after Irish Gold Cup win
Galopin Des Champs, last year's Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, is now odds-on to repeat his success at next month's Festival meeting after winning his first Irish Gold Cup in three attempts on Saturday.
The five-year-old had finished second to Fastorslow on two previous trips to Punchestown, but he kept on strongly to win by four and a half lengths at the line, with Fastorslow just a length back in second.
“We were hoping Conflated would make the running, but he didn't, and Paul Townend jumped really well on the first two,” said the winner's trainer, Willie Mullins. “It was the first time Fastorslow was looking confident, but then the signs started to come that we might be getting closer.”
The win completed Mullins’ four-in-a-row for the first four events of this year’s Dublin Racing Festival.
